It. Is. TIME! For another Bizarre-ities episode! Gosh, we love these!! Beth and Bettina BOTH chose cocktails for this episode and covered some real fun cases! Bettina covered stories and places from her recent trip to Savannah, GA! Ghosts passing each other in the night and bodies (Not tree roots) ruining sidewalks! Beth… oh Beth… she picked a wild one this week! She shares the tale of Gef. Gef, the talking Mongoose from the Isle of Man!   Cheers!!  Want the cocktail recipe?

Want to buy the ladies a drink? Want to see photos from this week’s episode? Check out this link… https://linktr.ee/Killer.Hangover.Podcasthttps://linktr.ee/Killer.Hangover.Podcast

Bettina covers the beautiful city of Savannah, the city built on the dead. So many paranormal, unexplained and bizarre things happen in this city, often referred to as the most hunted city in the US. Bettina covers some of the history and paranormal activity that occurs at the Mercer-Williams house and the Sorrell-Weed house as well as the weird, oppressive feeling while in Calhoun Square and the very cool Graveface Museum. But what happened to the “haunted dolls” pictures she took????

Beth wins “the most bizarre” in this episode. A mongoose named Gef (not Jeff, but Gef according to the mongoose), who can speak, gather and hunt, threaten and befriend. All this on the Isle of Man at an isolated farm on which lived James, Margaret and Vorrey Irving. Let me clarify, Gef stated that he was a mongoose, but he wasn’t. What he actually was, no-one seems to know. Clear as mud, right? Listen to this week’s “Bazarreties” episode to hear all about the story of Gef on the Isle of Man.

COCKTAILS: CHATHAM ARTILLERY PUNCH and THE MONGOOSE

The Mercer-Williams House, made popular by the book In the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.

There are three spirits that are said to be in the Mercer-Williams House. 11 year old Tommy Downs, Danny Hansford, and Jim Williams.

The Sorrel-Weed House is said to be the most haunted house in all of Savannah….and that’s saying something.

The house is definitely spooky, but no faces in my photos 😦

The square formally known as Calhoun Square. This is where Bettina got the weird, oppressive feeling.

The Graveface Museum is a must see while visiting Savannah, for those of you interested in cults, sideshow history, 1950s roadside attractions, secret societies, the occult and true crime.

Shrunken heads and a Haitian Vodun Skull are two items in the first room you go into when visiting the Graveface Museum. Then there is sooooo much more.

139. The Murder of Kelsey Smith / Hauntings of our “Founding Mothers”!

Cheers Hangover Listeners! And, Happy 4th of July week!

In episode 139 Bettina chose to cover a story from Kansas – Beth decided to cover the paranormal portion more fitting with the “holiday”!

Bettina covers the horrible true crime… the murder of Kelsey Smith, in Overland Park, Kansas. On a normal outing, something you and I do all the time without thinking twice, something so mundane – a trip to Target – Kelsey was targeted, trolled, taken, and killed. Her life mattered – and we urge all of our listeners to be vigilant in their surroundings no matter where you are when you’re out and about.

Upon looking for “4th of July Hauntings” Beth discovered some haunts she thought would be fun to share… from some “founding Mothers” of our country! A charming ghost who likes to party, screams from basements of tragedies past, seances in the White House, and much more! Cheers!

It was Saturday, June 2, 2007 in Overland Park, KS. 18 year old Kelsey Smith, who had graduated from High School 9 days prior, was making a fast run to Target. Kelsey Smith who’s life lay before her like an open book. She had been accepted to attend Kansas State University, where she was heading to in Aug. She was excited about studying Veterinarian medicine and playing her clarinet in the K-State Marching Band. But all this was not to be because her trip to Target that night brought her face to face with a killer.

What do Abigail Adams, Sara Henry, Betsy Ross, Dolly Madison and Mary Todd Lincoln have in common? I’ll give you a hint….they are all a bit transparent now. Beth does a great job in telling listeners not only the history, but all so about how these ladies are still “hanging around”. What’s keeping them tethered to this world? We don’t have answers to that, but we sure did share a few laughs as we dove into the question.

Beautiful, caring, ambitious Kelsey Smith was abducted from the Target parking lot in Overland Park, Kansas. https://fox4kc.com/news/lawmakers-reintroduce-kelsey-smith-act-named-after-overland-park-murder-victim/

Kelsey graduated from Shawnee Mission West High School just 9 days prior to her death. https://swsmmagazine.com/2021/06/the-legacy-of-kelsey-smith-her-army-marches-on/

At the time of Kelsey’s death cell phone companies were not obligated to ping the location of a victim’s cell phone to aid police in finding the victim. After Kelsey’s death Greg and Missey Smith, Kelsey’s parents, pushed for legislation that will enable law enforcement to find the location of a person who is endangered or missing. The Kelsey Smith Act has been implemented in 31 states and now there is a push to send the bill to a federal level. https://swsmmagazine.com/2021/06/the-legacy-of-kelsey-smith-her-army-marches-on/

138. The Death of Crystal Faye Todd / Tales of Being Buried Alive

Cheers Friends! Gosh, it feels so good to be back at recording! In this episode Beth and Bettina cover the state of South Carolina. Bettina shares the horrible story of Crystal Faye Todd. Where, unfortunately, Crystal was not safe – even with one of her closest friends. Beth then shares stories, haunts, and facts on the oh so wonderful subject of being buried alive… oh, and try the cocktail she made up! Its delicious!

For more Hangover : https://linktr.ee/Killer.Hangover.Podcast

Nov. 16, 1991 in Conway, South Carolina, 17 year old Crystal Faye Todd decides to meet up with friends at the local mall. As the curfews of her girlfriends come and go she is left with 45 min. before her curfew, 12/ midnight. Cruising through town Crystal meets up with 18 year old Ken Register, a dear friend she has known since she and Ken were in pre-school. But Ken harbors some deep, dark secrets and what happened to Crystal that fateful night becomes yet another one of Ken’s secrets. This case makes you wonder, “do we really know our friends as well as we think we do?”

“Cases of being accidentally buried alive date back to the 14th century when the body of a philosopher, John Duns Scotus was found outside his coffin – his hands bloodied from trying to get out”. So starts the second part of this episode. Beth does a great job covering this very morbid subject, where at times you have to gulp in a second breath as you imagine what it would be like to be Buried Alive. She even made her own cocktail for the subject, which she named……you guessed it, Buried Alive. Find the recipe below.

17 year old Crystal Todd was sexually assaulted and murdered Nov 16, 1991. Another young, beautiful life ended, for what? https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/7262774/crystal-faye-todd

Crystal was everything to her mother, Bonnie. Bonnie passed away in Sept. 2014 after years of bearing the horrible loss of her precious daughter. https://www.goldfinchfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Bonnie-Todd2461126/#!/TributeWall

Antoine Wiertz‘s painting of a man buried alive. Just the thought of being buried alive gives one the hebbie jebbies and makes a person take an extra breath of air. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premature_burial

Tying a string around the person’s fingers and stringing it from the casket to a bell attached to the head stone was one of the many “solutions” to quell people’s fear of being buried alive. Bettina begins with the mysterious death of Tiffany Viliante. Her death was deemed suicide by train… but, with all the other facts surrounding the case was it really a suicide? Bettina asks for your opinion on the case – let us know what you think? Beth ends the episode with a haunted road – Shades of Death Road and its surrounding area! Bear swamp with no bears, Cat swamp with a pack of cats… it’s quite the tale! So, grab your favorite cocktail of choice and enjoy this week’s Hangover!! July 12, 2015 is a day that Steve and Dianne Valiante will never forget. It is imprinted in their hearts and minds forever. It is the day their precious daughter, 18 year old Tiffany, was taken from them. Tiffany was an all around athlete with a full ride scholarship to attend and play volleyball at New York Mercy College, where she planned to major in Criminal justice. Her future was set, her life, outside of Mays Landing, New Jersey, lay ahead of her. So why did she commit suicide by train? Or did she? Could she have been murdered? In this week’s episode Bettina doesn’t answer those questions, but she lays out the arguments for both sides. Even after doing the research, Bettina is still “on the fence”, weigh in and let us know your thoughts are on Tiffany Valiante’s horrible death.

Beth takes us to a road with a name that tells it all, Shades of Death Road. This is not a nickname for the road, it is its actual name. But the haunted road and the shadow figures that have been seen on the road are not the only paranormal activities around this area in Warren County, New Jersey. Beth covers Ghost Lake with its eerie misty cover, Fairy Hole and its secrets, Cat Hollow (no not feral house cats Bettina, these are Wild Cats), and Bear Swamp (while talking about this area Beth realizes it has nothing to do with bears). We are back with lots of laughter and good nature ribbing in this section of the episode and we are so happy you can join us!

The deer camera at the end of the Valiante’s drive way picked up Tiffany walking away from the house. When her parents arrive at the end of the drive, a minute later, Tiffany was no where to be seen. https://www.newsweek.com/tiffany-valiante-unsolved-mysteries-volume-3-netflix-1753266

This is how Tiffany’s shoes were found, as well as her white headband, which lay nearby. The location is about 1 mile from her house and 1.75 miles from mile marker 45, where she was struck by the train. https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Tiffany_Valiante

The road’s ACTUAL name is Shades of Death Road. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shades_of_Death_Road

Why the strange name given to this road? Are some of the legends true? Or could it be that the twists and turns make it a very dangerous road to travel? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shades_of_Death_Road

So clear, calm and tranquil, yet there are many reports of strange happenings at Ghost Lake. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shades_of_Death_Road

James Clifford Carson and Susan Barnes Carson are American serial killers convicted in three murders between 1981 and 1983 in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area. The couple was heavily involved in drugs and mysticism and shortly into their marriage they assumed new names, Michael Bear and Suzan Bear. Suzan claimed to have mystical powers which allowed her to sense if a person was a witch, so the couple’s self appointed mission was to exterminate people they believed to be witches, because of this the press gave them the name “the San Francisco Witch Killers”. Listen to this weeks episode as Beth takes us into this very strange True Crime in which you may have to ask yourself several times “say what???”

Hey, it’s been a while since Bettina mentioned Ghost Adventures in her paranormal portion of an episode, but one can not research hauntings at Los Coches Adobe without coming across the Ghost Adventures’ crew’s experience at the site. The adobe was built in 1843 as a residence, but continued as several other posts, playing a big part in the area. It was a Wells Fargo Station Agent office, a post office, a stage coach stop and an inn. It is also said to have been a brothel, one that was frequented by miners riding the stage coaches. Legend has it that the madam of the brothel would sneak into the miner’s rooms as they slept, slit their throats, steal their hard earned money and gold, then dump their bodies in a well somewhere on the property. Whether this is true is hard to say, but many people around the Los Coches Adobe refuse to go into the building after they have visited it. Just from my research, I can tell you that this is one haunted building I have no desire to enter, way too much bad juju.

Suzan and Michael Bear admitted to investigators and in interviews that they killed Karen Barnes, Clark Stevens and John Hellier because their victims were witches. Photo; DISCOVERY CHANNEL  https://www.thejournal.ie/suzan-michael-carson-san-francisco-witch-killers-parole-2481589-Dec2015/

In June 2001 news hit the nation that 37 year old Andrea Yates, of Clear Water City, TX had killed all five of her children. As posted above, this was a hard episode to get through without shedding some tears, but it’s also an event that most people have heard about and one that I wanted to explore. What would make a mother kill her children? The question hangs in the air, but in Andrea’s case postpartum psychosis seems to be the answer. Listen as I dive into this very disturbing case. Could the deaths have been avoided if Dr’s warnings had been heeded? Would they have been avoided if the very medication that was helping Andrea cope had not been stopped? If there’s something to take from this case it’s that the brain, our minds, are very mysterious, with much still left to be explored.

Beth covers the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, TX, but to really add to the story she had a bottle of Crazy Water from Mineral Wells sent to me. It’s, umm, interesting. I share comments on the water on the episode. Strange, water is water, right? But the Crazy Water tasted, and weirdly, “felt” different from tap or filtered water. Now on to the actual premise of the segment, the hauntings at the Baker Hotel. Beth dives into the history of the once beautiful resort, which, of course, leads into the many hauntings that have been recorded. I’m not going to “spill the beans” on the hauntings, you’ll have to listen for those 🙂

Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and The silence of the Lambs; all have one thing in common, Ed Gein. His story is so gruesome and horrific that it’s no surprise Hollywood picked up on it. Gein grew up in a very abusive home, yet his mother was his world, he all but worshipped her. After her death he cordoned off the areas of the house that his mother had used most frequently, making the areas a shrine of sorts, Psycho anyone? Gein dug up bodies from the surrounding cemeteries and then progressed to killing two women. What he did with the bodies and how that correlates with the listed movies, well, you’re just going to have to listen to the episode……And, yes, Beth does feel very sorry for Gein, listen and you’ll know why.

Summerwind Mansion, also known as Lamont Mansion, was built in the early 1900s. It sat close to the West Bay Lake and began its days as a fishing lodge. In 1916 it was bought and renovated by Robert Patterson Lamont. The first account of the mansion being haunted happened shortly after Lamont and his family moved into the building. Since then there have been a series of owners, each with their own stories of hauntings. Shadow figures, spirit attachments, disembodied voices, cabinet doors and windows opening and closing by themselves….but the oddest phenomena was through blueprints and pictures it seemed as if space and time were distorted at Summerwind Mansion. Say what?

In 1957 Ed Gein was charged with the murders of Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and was sentenced to confinement in mental institutions. https://www.britannica.com/biography/Ed-Gein

Photo of Gein in a mental hospital shortly before his death. He died on July 26, 1984 at the age of 78. He was senile and had suffered a long while with cancer. he died of respiratory failure. https://www.reddit.com/r/LPOTL/comments/aq3htq/ed_gein_in_the_mental_institution_shortly_before/

You’ll have to use your imagination to see the grandeur that Summerwind Mansion was in the past. Photo by Fox Valley Ghost Hunters https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/wisconsin/ghost-tour-summerwind-wi/

Over time Summerwind became more and more dilapidated, perhaps this is what the spirits wanted all along? On June 19, 1988, the mansion burned to the ground. It was reported that the fire was caused by a lightning strike, but was it? https://paranormalmilwaukee.com/news/a-second-look-summerwind-mansion/

The mansion today is just ruins with a stone wall and two stone chimneys jutting up from the ground. Perhaps there are still spirits that linger around the ruins, but from this bright and sunny photo it looks like trees and undergrowth are the only inhabitants. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Summerwind_chimneys.jpg

It was April 5, 1984 in Pleasanton, CA. 14 year old Tina Fealz was walking home from school by way of a shortcut running under the 680 freeway. A short time later her bloodied body was found. Tina had been stabbed 44 times. The police were not short of suspects, but one by one they they fell off the list. In this episode Bettina covers the ins and outs of the case, introducing listeners to Tina Fealz, her untimely death and the men who were questioned in the years following the murder. This is not an unsolved crime, the killer is behind bars, but will he soon be paroled?

Beth covers movies and their sets that are reported to have been haunted. Curses claiming the lives of actors and members of their families. Strange illnesses affecting actors. Objects moving around the movie set. Listeners will be stunned after hearing the unexplained activities happening on the sets of Amityville Horror, The Conjuring and The Omen…just to name a few of the movies Beth covers.

H.H. Holmes, the man , the myth, the legend. Most of us have heard of him, of his terrible hotel in Chicago with dead end hallways and locked rooms, and a shoot that Holmes would use to send the dead women to the basement. We’ve heard about the way he tortured the women and then horribly kill them, getting rid of their bodies in the incinerator in the basement. The stories are vast, gruesome, and dare I say, intriguing. But for the most part everything you have heard about the infamous H.H. Holmes are false. Beth will cover the REAL story of Holmes. Yes, he was a bad man, he was a swindler and a cheat, but did he really kill the 27 women he claimed to have murdered? Listen to this week’s episode to find the answer.

In 1995 unearthing an engraved 15″ by 20″ rock buried in his yard, Gilbert Woods thought it would make a great addition to the rock garden surrounding his fountain. Boy, was he wrong! Strange things started happening to the family shortly after finding the rock, shadow figures were seen in the house, the children complained of being awakened at night by someone touching their feet. Then Gilbert’s wife Trudy lost her eye sight for three months for no explainable reason. After having an unexpected heart attack Gilbert gave the rock to their family friend, Linda Klyst in 1979. Then she began having serious problems, including a friend’s death. the rock was handed off to parapsychologist, Evelyn Paglini. She too started experiencing strange things, as did her assistant,  Linda Heracek. Evelyn Paglini seems to be keeping it a secret as to where the rock is at this time. If you come across the rock, may I suggest to stay clear of it. The Jane Adams Hull House Museum at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the oldest building in the center part of the city. And with it being the oldest building come a lot of stories and legends, including a hovering ghost and a “devil’s baby” dropped off on Jane Adams’ front steps. Where did the baby come from? To answer that Bettina shares with you two, ummm, fantastical legends.

Herman Mudgett, AKA H.H. Holmes, was a swindler and a cheat. He is also considered America’s first known serial killer, but did he kill the 27 women he claims to have murdered? Or the 200 people the Newspapers, at the time, headlined he did? https://www.britannica.com/biography/H-H-Holmes

The Murder Castle. According to sensationalist reports, the space featured soundproof rooms, secret passages and a confusing maze of hallways and staircases. But did it? Photo: Chicago History Museum/Getty Images https://www.history.com/topics/crime/murder-castle

The Englewood Post Office now sits on a portion of the site once occupied by the famous “H.H. Holmes Murder Castle.”   https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/englewood-post-office

The Hull Manson became the first settlement house in America. It was founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889 after they took over the abandoned Hull Mansion built by Charles Hull in 1856. Buildings were gradually added until the settlement house covered a half a city block. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Hull-House

I thought I’d use a cute hovering Casper the Ghost, but can you imagine waking in the early morning hours and opening you eyes to a hovering woman ghost right above you? Supposedly that is exactly what Jane Addams, and her guests experienced in Hull Mansion. October 5th, 2017 61 year old Teteteke Gqotsi underwent abdominal surgery at Stellenbosch Hospital in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The next day he vanished from his hospital bed. 14 days later Teteteke’s body was found in the corner of the ceiling of the hospital. Cause of death was released to the family, but not to the public and how Teteteke even got up to the ceiling is unknown. On May 10, 2019 53 year old Sandile Sibiya broke his femur and was rushed to Durban’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital ( South Africa). On the second day after his surgery Sandile disappeared from his hospital bed. On May 24 Sandile’s body was found in a corner of the ceiling above the hospital’s storage room. Autopsy results were released to the family, but not to the public. Again it is unknown as to how Sandile entered the ceiling. Both men were recovering from surgery, neither man could have hoisted himself into the ceiling. there was no evidence of foul play, the time between a nurse seeing the patients and the time they disappeared was only a matter of a few minutes. Listen as Bettina covers these two bizarre stories and the theories that attempt to explain this mystery.

The year was 1959 – and according to a Soviet Criminal Investigation a “compelling natural force” led to the death of 9 hikers in the Ural mountains.  The group has become known as the Dyatlov group. Hypothermia was determined to be the number one cause of death of most of the members of the hiking group, but the injuries found on some of the bodies raises more questions than answers. Crushed rib cages, skull fractures, missing eyes, and one victim was found with no tongue. Radioactivity was even found on some of the bodies. Are you baffled yet? Beth does a great job covering this case. Giving us a glimpse into each of the hiker’s lives, so that we see them as the individuals they were and not just 9 experienced hikers that died horrific deaths. She shares this case from its beginning as the nine university students set off, she reads parts of the member’s journals, the different stops the group made on their journey, and the horrible findings when the bodies were discovered. There are many theories as to what caused the deaths, some of which Beth covers also…..is that photo of a Yeti? She leaves us hanging, so join us next week for part 2.
