I (Bettina) once again apologize for forgetting my mic. Packing for Maui was fast and furious, my recording equipment lay forgotten in my office, but even without a mic, I think you’ll be able to pick up on the way I feel about this week’s murderer, Pam Hupp. Manipulative and beyond greedy, this woman pulls no punched, she literally kills to get more, more, more. Many of you have heard about Pam Hupp, she was a pretty big name in the True Crime world, and beyond, several years ago. Then Netflix did the three part, “What About Pam” series, which once again brought Pam Hupp’s name to the forefront. As you listen to this week’s episode, you’ll find out what a terrible, evil, and conniving woman Pam is. AGGGG! It just makes me angry thinking about it. Give us a listen and let us know, did you too feel the evil emanating from this average looking, mild mannered woman?

Gratefully, Beth shares a very active site that helps to bring the true crime to the back of your mind. She covers The Beattie Mansion also known as “The House on the Hill”. It sits at 1120 Main St, St Joseph, MO, built in 1854, it was the home of Armstrong and Eliza Beattie. In 1880 having died with no heirs the mansion was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolent Association. They turned it into a shelter for homeless and suffering people actually naming it, “Home for the Friendless”, how depressing is that? In 1895 the house was converted into the Memorial Home for the Aged, in 1995 the house was used as a group home for the mentally ill and substance abusers. In 2004 it was bought by private owners who wanted it converted into a bed and breakfast. So much history with so many sad people living within its walls, is it any wonder it is known as the most haunted building in St Joseph and possibly even one of the most haunted in the US? Listen as Beth covers this very active house, so active that it is almost impossible to NOT witness some paranormal activity while visiting. This is definitely on our “have to go visit” list!

33 year old Louis Gumpenberger was lured to Pam’s home. He was shot 5 times by Pam who claimed he was an intruder. Then the truth came out, Pam used Louis as a pawn to spotlight Russ again as a killer. https://www.the-sun.com/news/3815226/serial-killer-pam-hupp-renee-zellweger/

Pam Hupp’s arrest photo after she tried to commit suicide with a ball point pen, a complete fail.

Pam was facing the death penalty for the murder of Louis Gumpenberger, To avoid this penalty she entered an Alfred Plea, which admits there is evidence stacked against the defendant, but they do not admit guilt in the case. Pam received life in prison for the death of Louis. She was also convicted of the murder of Betsy Faria, the trial is ongoing with the prosecutor asking for the death penalty. https://www.nbcnews.com/dateline/pam-hupp-avoids-death-penalty-plea-faces-life-prison-2016-n1019511

Because of the many distressed souls this mansion housed throughout the years it is no surprise that the Beattie Mansion is very haunted. https://thelanding.missourirealtor.org/blogs/missouri-realtors/2021/10/06/missouris-haunted-homes

Glinda Sodemann, 19, Doris Oehring, 11, Marlene Peters, 20, Wendy Wilson, 16, Lori King, 19. These are the names of the five women from the Fairbanks, Alaska area that were murdered between 1979 – 1981. Investigators linked the women to one killer because of the way the women had been killed and the placement of their bodies, in a wooded area close to Eielson Airforce Base, outside of Fairbanks. Finding the murderer was not an easy task, but finally in March 1983 Thomas Bunday was arrested and was interrogated in Wichita Falls, TX, where the Air Force had transferred him from Eielson. Even though evidence was found at Bunday’s house connecting him to the murders and he admitted to killing the women he could not be arrested because there was no arrest warrant, so he was let go. Listen as Beth covers the sequence of events leading up to finding Bunday and what happened after investigators released him after their interrogation. This is a very interesting, but not widely known case.

Fairbanks, Alaska became incorporated in 1903. 123 years ago. Since that time Fairbanks has slowly grown to its current population of 32,702. The city has a history and with that comes paranormal activity. Bettina couldn’t limit herself to just one site in town, and in fact, left out some sites. Listen as she covers 4 locations and their “otherworldly” residence.

This ghostly mist appeared as just as paranormal investigator Jessie Desmond picked up a male voice saying “HI”. https://lonelyhepkat.blogspot.com/search?q=Birch+Hill+Cemetery

The Westmark Hotel where the “huge man” resides. Many reports are of this apparition pushing the bed, poking people in the shoulder, and running a finger along the carpet. The “huge man” likes room 277 in particular, so if you’re staying in Fairbanks and want to “meet” him ask for that room. Please get back to us if you see him. https://www.valisemag.com/haunted-places-in-fairbanks/

127. Tracey Richter / The Haunted Squirrel Cage Jail in Iowa

Tracey Richter, listeners fasten your seatbelts. This woman is UNBELIEVABLE! She seems to leave chaos, wreckage and pain where ever she goes. She’s beautiful, very smart, and if she doesn’t get her way, she’s scary. Tracey married John Pittman, a medical student going into plastic surgery, in 1989. They had a son, Bert, in 1990. The marriage spiraled out of control and the couple was divorced in 1996, but not before Tracey accused John of sexually abusing their son. John, who in all actuality was the better parent of the two, was found innocent of the accusation, but Tracey wasn’t done with him yet. Their custody battle was extremely hostile and lasted for years. Tracey met and married Michael Roberts, from Australia, shortly after her divorce. The marriage showed cracks right away, but Michael was determined to stick it out. They had two children, Noah in 1998 and their daughter Mason in 2000. John Pittman was still fighting Tracey for custody of Bert, actually asking for full custody. Tracey would not only lose Bert, but also the monthly child support she was receiving. Her answer to this dilemma was one in which a young man was horrifically killed and lies were told. Was Tracey a hero that saved the lives of her three children and herself when two intruders broke into her home? Or was she a sadistic murderer who used the life of an innocent young man to get her out of the child custody battle with John? The answers lie in the pink notebook found on the front seat of the car belonging to Dustin Wehde, the deceased young man. Tune into this week’s episode as Bettina covers what lead up to and happened after the murder of 20 year old Dustin Wehde on Dec 13, 2001.

Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 1800s was a place that needed a jail, but the town didn’t have a lot of money to give to this project, so a very interesting concept was thought up. The town built a “human rotary” or “lazy Susan” jail that would only need one prison guard. What in the world is that? Beth explains the concept and history of Squirrel Cage Jail. It’s very interesting how this three story building, that held up to 90 prisoners, including men, women and children, worked and how it also could go terribly wrong. That this place is haunted should not surprise anyone. Heavy footsteps, voices and full body apparitions. Beth covers these and other paranormal activity found in the Council Bluffs Squirrel Cage Jail.

Richter was eventually found guilty of the 1st degree murder of Dustin Wehde. She received life in prison without parole, but to this day she maintains her innocence. https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/crime-and-courts/2014/07/10/tracey-richter-mother-linked-witness-harassment-search-warrant-computer-flash-drives-seized/12444821/

November 21, 2021, the town of Waukesha, WI held their annual Christmas Parade. Floats, the High School band, the town’s sports teams, including the Blazers baseball team, and the Milwaukee Dancing Grandmas, among other hometown participants. The sidewalks were crowded with Waukesha residents and visitors. Parents and grandparents sitting in lawn chairs, thermoses of hot cocoa close at hand, and children sitting on the curbs ready to sprint out into the street to grab candy thrown out by the parade participants. People were cheering and laughing, everyone having a good time, until they weren’t. The unimaginable happened, a red Ford Escape was barreling down the street.  Darrell Brooks, in a fit of rage, was driving the Ford. Running through police barriers, stop lights and stop signs. With no regard to anyone’s life or safety, he drove down the parade route killing 6 people, physically injuring over 70 and mentally impacting everyone attending the parade.

Brooks’ antics in court were ridiculous and extremely disrespectful to the victims. The jury found Brooks guilty on all 76 counts stemming from the attack, including six counts of first-degree intentional homicide with the use of a dangerous weapon. On Nov 16, 2022, Judge Jennifer Dorow imposed the mandated sentences, ordering Brooks to serve consecutive life sentence without the possibility of parole for each of the first-degree homicide counts. On top of that he received 762.5 years for the counts of reckless endangerment and 6 years more for bail jumping Beth followed both the trial and the sentencing and shares, with us, what she learned and the court proceedings.

124. Rajneesh in Rajneeshpuram / The Legend of Heceta Head Lighthouse

Summary

A little different take on “true crime” this week in Bettina’s story.  She shares about the “religion-less teacher” who leads with his religious teachings…Rajneesh.  He led by a vow of silence in his Rolls-Royce driving down the streets of the little city his followers created, Rajneeshpuram in Oregon.  With his devout followers, laughing and crying, meditations, sex, and the color red Rajneesh and his “right hand woman” Sheela, changed the little town of Antelope, Oregon forever!  Beth takes her paranormal story to the coast of Oregon – to Heceta Head. Where there’s the most picturesque bed and breakfast and Lighthouse that’s “haunted” by a ghost named Rue?

Chandra Mohan Jen, aka “the sex guru”, later changed his name to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (or just Rajneesh), and then even later to Osho. He started holding meditation camps and recruiting followers in 1964. He grew in popularity, not only in India, but throughout the world. He promoted dynamic meditation and free love. By 1981 Rajneesh had so many followers that they ran out of room in the ashram in India. Rajneesh sent his right hand woman, Ma Anand Sheela, to the US to buy land. 64,229 acres in central Oregon were purchased, right outside of the small town of Antelope in Wasco county. It took only 3 years for the followers of Rajneesh to build a city, Rajneeshpuram. A city complete with an electric power plant, a sewage plant, townhouses, fire and police departments, and a large shopping center with eateries and boutiques (all of which sold only red clothing, the color the followers were asked to wear). After the city was built and Rajneesh and his followers settled in, the trouble started. Listen as Bettina covers time before Rajneeshpuram, its seven year existence, and into the end of the community in Oregon.

Along the Oregon coast is a 200 foot bluff, Heceta Head, that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. Nestled on the bluff is a 56 foot tall lighthouse that has shone its light since 1894. The life of the lighthouse keeper and his two assistance was a bit dismal. Each had a house for the men and their families, but that was pretty much all that was there. It was a very isolated life. Now days the lighthouse keeper’s house and the lighthouse have been restored and serve as a lovely, quaint Bed and Breakfast, with a residential ghost named Rue. Rue is said to have been the wife of one of the lighthouse keepers. Legend has it that her daughter fell from the bluff into the sea and drowned. Rue still searches for her lost daughter. Beth gives more information into the history of Heceta Head Lighthouse, the present Bed and Breakfast, the ghost, Rue, and how the name was given to the ghost,

Thousands of Rajneesh’s followers would line the street of Rajneeshpuram every afternoon to pay homage to him as he drove slowly by in one of his 94 Rolls Royces. https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/104308772/wild-wild-country-i-did-research-at-rajneeshpuram-and-here-is-what-i-learned

Martha Moxley was a popular 15 year old living with her parents and bother in the exclusive neighborhood of Belle Haven in Greenwich, Connecticut. Across the street from the Moxley’s lived the Skakel’s, related by marriage to the Kennedy’s. Martha was friends with two of the Skakel boys, 15 year old Michael and 17 year old Tommy. So her mother, Dorthy, thought nothing of it when on the night of October 30, 1975, Martha asked and was allowed to go across the street to a party at the Skakel’s house. BUT, Martha never came home that night. Her parents searched the neighborhood and called all of her friends, no one knew where she was until the next day. Halloween afternoon Martha’s beaten dead body was found under a tree in her own back yard. She had been beaten and killed in her driveway the night before between 9:30pm and 10:00pm, then dragged to where she was found. The murder weapon was found to be a golf club used in such a fit of rage that it had broken from the hard blows to Martha’s body. Because they were the last to see Martha, Michael and Tommy were immediately under suspicion. Listen as Beth dives deeper into this case. Was the right person imprisoned or is there someone out there that was never even questioned?

October 31, Halloween. We have parties, trick or treat, wear costumes, and watch scary movies, but where in this world did the holiday of Halloween come from? Bettina goes back 2,000 years to the Celtic festival of Samhain and takes you through the evolution of the Halloween we know today.

William (BJ) Liske’s aggression towards his stepmother, Susan, span many years and during that time escalated from verbal to physical. BJ suffered from Schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, making him very hard to live with at times, especially when he was off of his meds., but his father, William, always stood by his son’s side. This, of course, put William in a very tough position. He was loyal to his son, but he had to protect his wife. This position was put to the test when BJ attacked Susan while she was in the shower. William had no choice, he moved 18 year old BJ out of the family home and into a halfway house. On Oct 31, 2010 the family’s problems reached a peak. Listen as Bettina describes what 16 year old Devon, Susan’s youngest son, thought, at first, to be a Halloween stunt but soon realized was a horrible nightmare.

Beth covers the legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman. Most of us have heard the story, but now we become more informed as Beth tells us the context and insights into the main character, Ichabod Crane. We feel for Ichabod on that dark, cold, lonely stretch home. Not a real brave soul to begin with, his mind becomes filled with the story of the Headless Horseman. He can hardly keep it together because of his fear. He has to make it across the bridge that the Horseman can not cross, then he’ll be safe! Then, just a short distance from the bridge, he hears the galloping of a horse behind him, gaining on him, when he turns to look his fear escalates because the rider has no head!!! What a great Halloween story thanks to the imagination of writer, Washington Irving!

William, BJ, Liske plead guilty to the murders of his father, mother, and stepbrother. On Sept. 14, 2011 he received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. What is going on in BJ’s mind at the time of this picture?https://www.cantonrep.com/story/news/state/2011/09/14/william-liske-gets-life-for/42565162007/

Both Sleepy Hollow and Ichabod Crane have been depicted in many forms, from cartoon to Johnny Depp, from funny to down right scary. https://halloweenspecials.fandom.com/wiki/Ichabod_Crane

The true crime this week will have you going down rabbit holes…so many questions and no answers. 18 year old Josh Maddux left his house on May 8, 2008 to go for a walk. Josh was not seen again until August 2015 when a demolition team found his body stuck in the chimney of a cabin less than a mile from his home. Had he tried to get into the cabin by way of the chimney? But then why were his clothes in a pile neatly folded inside the cabin? The coroner’s report stated “Accidental death”. Listen as Beth covers this mind boggling true crime. Was it an extremely odd accidental death or was it murder?

Who’s up for a road trip to the quaint, little town of Manitou Springs, Colorado? Bettina covers not one, but three places in the town which was founded in 1872. Disembodied voices of children, running footsteps and children’s laughter have been reported many times by guests of the historic Avenue Hotel B&B. For dinner one can go to Briarhurst Manor, but don’t just expect a delicious meal. There have been sightings of a skeletal lady in white who is said to float around the grounds. And many reports of a little girl playing ball on the lawn, only this little girl is wearing clothing from a century ago. Then there’s the story of poor, sick Emma Crawford whose only real desire was to be buried on the top of Red Mountain when she died. Her desire was fulfilled, but due to unfortunate circumstances Emma and her coffin did not stay in their original burial spot and instead where washed down the mountain. Emma was laid to rest in the town’s cemetery, but it is said that she roams Red Mountain searching for the spot she was originally laid to rest. Listen and you’ll find out how the town of Manitou remembers Emma every year around Halloween since 1994.

Joshua Maddux went missing May 8, 2008. Family and friends never gave up hope that Josh was alive until that horrible day, 7 years later, when his body was found. https://www.denverpost.com/2015/10/19/chimney-discovery-ends-mystery-over-young-mans-disappearance-but-questions-remain/

Bettina starts the episode with a warning:  If you have a weak stomach and you’re eating while listening, you may want to wait for an hour or so after you eat to resume listening. Why? She covers the topic of cannibalism. There are actually 9 different types of cannibalism, or anthropophagi. Bettina covers five of these, survival, pathological, epicurean, or gustatory, medicinal, and sacrificial cannibalism. Intrigued? Listen as cannibalism from around the world is covered.

Beth covers the fascinating topic of children and the spirit world. Beth disputes the thought that children are just more in tune with the spirit world than we are, instead she suggests that maybe it’s their innocence that enables them to be psychic or see spirits. Think about a child’s imagination, or their “imaginary” friend. To the child there is no “imaginary” about it, they see the friend, they listen and speak to their friend. Perhaps it’s the same thing with spirits. The child can actually see the spirit and interact with it. Most of us adults can not see these spirits because we have shut that part of our brain. Society tells us we can not “see dead people”, or our minds are so full of concerns and doubts so much so that we can no longer be open to imagination. Join us as Beth covers this intriguing topic as well as shares her interview with Reiki Master and Intuitive, Christy Marsh.

The skull unearthed in Jamestown shows markings to it that indicate that survival cannibalism may have happened among the few remaining, starving colonists. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/05/01/jamestown-cannibalism/2126421/

In the Smithsonian article, Sleeping with Cannibals, Journalist Paul Raffaele shared his visit with a Korowai Clan located deep in the jungle of Indonesia. The Korowai practice ritual/sacrificial cannibalism. The article, listed below, is a fascinating read. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/sleeping-with-cannibals-128958913/
