Bizarre Things and a Killer Hangover See Ya Later!

To end Season 1 / 4 years of this amazing Hangover we thought Bizarre stories would be fun! From Ed and Lorraine Warren to sea cucumbers, to a flower that smells like a rotting corpse, Beth and Bettina cover it all!

Cheers to you, cheers to us, cheers to all the fun we had on the show! Thank you!

Ed and Lorraine Warren, were the pioneers of paranormal investigations. Beth covers this couple who, starting in the 1950’s, worked together on clearing homes, joining Catholic priests in exorcisms and educating people on demonic possessions and hauntings. The Warrens claim to have consulted on over 10,000 cases! Beth goes on to tell us of two very interesting cases involving the Warrens. To close her part of the episode she leaves the Warrens and shares with us the creepy Elsa doll, say what? This is truly what nightmares are made of.

Bettina totally changes course and challenges Beth with trivia of weird and crazy facts. As you listen, see how many questions you can answer. Giant geoglyphs 250 miles south of Lima, Peru and information on the endangered Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) end her segment of the episode.

Both Beth and Bettina express their love for the podcast and their audience. We want to remind you that this was just season one, season two will come in its time. Meanwhile, you can relisten to any of our 150 episodes and/or introduce our podcast to people you know. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey! Cheers!

Beth was right and Bettina wrong. We did see a Corpse Flower in the botanical gardens outside of Chicago, and Beth took this picture to prove it. It takes 7-10 years for these flowers to bloom and then they bloom for only 24 to 36 hours. So interesting!

Missing Bryce Laspisa / The Haunted Oliver House

Episode 149 and Beth still can’t do an introduction … and Bettina messed up on states! But, that’s okay, because this episode is a “doozy” regardless!

Beth covers the mysterious case of Bryce Laspisa; where did he go? This one truly leaves us befuddled! Bettina follows up with the many haunts of the Oliver house… beware the Grandma and the Cuckoo Clock!

Cheers!

You can email us at killerhangoverpodcast@gmail.com

COCKTAIL: GIN AND TONIC (MADE WITH AVIATION GIN, BETTINA’S NEW FAV, AND Q SPECTACULAR TONIC WATER)

Bryce Laspisa, what caused his strange behavior and what happened to him? Aug. 30, 2023 marked the 10 year anniversary of Bryce’s disappearance. The 19 year old left Sierra College near Sacramento to drive the 8 hour drive to his parent’s home in Laguna Niguel, Orange Co. on Aug 28, 2013. His parents reported him missing on Aug 29 when he had not made it home. Then on the 30th police found Bryce’s car 15 feet down a ravine at Castaic Lake. His wallet, cell phone and laptop were still in the car, but Bryce was nowhere to be found. Listen as Beth covers the strange things that happened during Bryce’s drive home to the last conversation he had with his mother at 2am on Aug 30.

Anyone with any information from 2013 or sooner that could help investigators locate Bryce can call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at (323) 890-5500 or contact NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

To provide information anonymously, call Crime Stoppers at  (800) 222-TIPS (8477), use a smartphone and download the Crimestoppers Tips Mobile App on Google Play or the Apple App Store, or go to the website.

Bettina has no idea what caused her to cover the paranormal in Arizona instead of California, but by doing so she discovered The Oliver House in Bisbee. This Bed and Breakfast is supposedly haunted by no less than 6 spirits. They each seem to have their own room in the house and it seems almost unusual for guests to not have a paranormal experience while visiting. Listen as Bettina takes you to each room and talks about the spirit within. Then she covers the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG), otherwise known as the boneyard/graveyard for aircrafts, which is located in Tucson, Arizona. She doesn’t cover the paranormal at this site, just paints the scene of 4,400 planes for Beth, who has a paranoia of aircrafts. “love ya kid!”:-)

148. Suzanne Morphew /&/ Tommy Knockers and Haunted Mines in Colorado

Hello and welcome to the mess that is episode 148! How do we ever get through an episode when we record in person together?! But, gosh, we share a lot of laughs. To begin the episode Bettina shares the unsolved death of Suzanne Morphew. An absolute mystery… what are your thoughts? And, please, leave all the animal creature theories out of it!! For the paranormal portion Beth takes us deep into the mines with tales of hauntings, Tommy Knocker legend, and bacon? Cheers Friends!!

Suzanne and Barry Morphew were high school sweethearts, 6 years after high school they married and on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020 Suzanne was reported missing. Her bicycle was found in brush off a road and her helmet was found 5 days later a mile from where her bike had been found. But did she even go for a bike ride? Her sunglasses and water pack, which she always had on her when she rode, were found in her car. The twists in this True Crime are unbelievable. Did Barry have anything to do with Suzanne’s death? There is no evidence indicating his involvement, but there sure are suspicious things in his timeline. OR was the killer the unknown man who left his DNA on the glovebox in Suzanne’s car? Listen as Bettina runs through this case. Suzanne’s body was found on Sept 22, 2023 in Moffett, an area 40 miles from where she had lived, but instead of answer, this discovery leaves us with even more questions.

Tommy Knockers what/who are they? What do they look like? What do they eat? Are they good or evil? These questions are answered by Beth in her segment of this episode. She also covers hauntings in the Cripple Creek mines and the very haunted town of Cripple Creek itself. For the Paranormal junkies out there, I think it’s pretty safe to say, that after listening you’ll be drawn to visit Cripple Creek, Colorado yourself!

147. Happy Halloween

Hello, hello and welcome to our Halloween episode! Hold on to your butts, and buckle up, cause you’re in for a wild spooky ride! Beth starts the episode with a true crime story made for Hollywood… it’s so hard to believe it’s a true story! Bettina ends the episode with some scary ghost stories sent in from friends/listeners! Cheers to you all! Have a safe and happy Halloween!

October 31, 1963. It was a chilly fall night in the small town of Cedar Creek, Indiana. Parents of 6 year old Tony and 17 year old Sandy came home from running an errand. Pulling into their driveway they found Tony sitting in the front yard, catatonic. Inside the house they found a very bloody scene. Sandy had been stabbed to death, her murderer, little Tony. Child murderers, now there’s a haunting topic. But this story doesn’t end in 1963. Beth takes us to 1978, when Tony, now age 21, escaped from the mental institution he had been confined to since the murder of his sister. Listen as Beth tells the progressively bloody story that occurred after Tony’s escape.

We love stories of personal witnessing of the paranormal! Bettina was able to gather several experiences shared by friends/ listeners. Stories ranging from a conversation outside a hospital room with a distressed Doctor’s spirit, a little boy playing checkers with his grandfather, who had died, to the very haunting story of the spirit of a boy visiting a boy at night beckoning the boy to “come play”. Was the spirit’s intention to lead the boy to his death? Listen as Bettina recounts these and more strange paranormal stories that were told to her.

You’ll Believe In Ghosts After Watching This (Extreme Ghost Stories) | Our Life

146. Mary Ann Cotton /&/ Black Eyed Kids

Who’s ready for another Spoooooky Season Episode?!

Bettina begins with the outrageous story of Mary Ann Cotton. “Sing? Sing? What song should I sing?
Mary Ann Cotton is tied up in string…” Did we mention this tale was outrageous??

Beth keeps with the outrageous theme and covers the tales and stories of BEKs…Black.Eyed.Kids! Beware! And, don’t let any children in to use the restroom… just send them to Hardees for Ketchup!

Cheers!

COCKTAIL: POISON APPLE Recipe Source

Have you ever heard of Gastric Fever? If not, you’ll definitely know what it is after listening to our episode on Mary Ann Cotton. The term Serial Killer had not been coined in 1852, but that’s exactly what Mary Ann was. From 1852 to 1872 she killed no less than 21 people, mostly children. She was hung in 1872 and shortly afterwards a nursery rhyme about her was sung, perhaps the children she killed joined the living children singing it? Creepy! After listening to the episode, the nursery rhyme will make more sense.

Mary Ann Cotton, she’s dead and she’s rotten. She lies in her bed With eyes wide open. Sing, sing, oh, what can I sing, Mary Ann Cotton is tied up with string. Where, where? Up in the air Sellin’ black puddens a penny a pair. Mary Ann Cotton She’s dead and forgotten, She lies in a grave with her bones all-rotten; Sing, sing, oh, what can we sing, Mary Ann Cotton is tied up with string.

BEKs, Black Eyed Kids. We don’t know why we both mention children in Episode 146, but believe us, the children mentioned in the True Crime are completely different from the BEKs. There are so many reports of people’s encounters with BEKs, they knock on car windows when people sit in their parked cars, they knock on the front or back doors of houses, they knock on windows of homes and after the knocks are answered they ask if they can come in. It is human nature to want to help a lost or hurt child, but that instinct is quickly turned to dread as the BEKs look into your face. Their eyes are completely black. Listen as Beth shares some of the many reports from people who have encountered these terrifying creatures. And since we care, we will highly advise , should they come visit , DO NOT LET THEM IN!!

Mary Ann Cotton was considered attractive in her time. There must have definitely been some kind of draw to this self centered woman. Photo Source

145. John Edward Robinson /&/ The Russian Sleep Experiment

Spooky Season starts early with your Hangover this week! Beth just couldn’t wait any longer! She shares a “Zombie Brain” shot with you all as she and Bettina share their stories! Delicious by the way…

Bettina begins the episode with a slime ball of a man; John Edward Robinson. A “robust” man who claimed to grow vegetables with no soil… but, was also an online creep who led to the deaths of many vulnerable women.

Beth, excited for the paranormal portion of the episode, shares the almost unbelievable story of “The Russian Sleep Experiment”!

Cheers!

John Edward Robinson was seen as the perfect father and husband. He was a man of success, he was a soccer and baseball coach, Boy Scout leader, he even help found the Presbyterian Church in his neighborhood and became an elder in the church. The phrase, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, certainly applies to Robinson. Seen on the outside as a “robust” man with brilliant blue eyes and an easy smile, but on the inside there was darkness and pure evil. Listen as Bettina shares the true crime of the “first internet serial killer”.

Beth delivers an unbelievable story that will send shivers down your spine. A Russian sleep experiment turned horribly wrong. As we all know, sleep is important to both animals and humans. Without sleep our bodies start to fail and more dramatically, our brains begin to “malfunction”. If you doubt this, listen to Beth’s paranormal, it’s pretty mind blowing!

144. Premonition of Kathy Hobbs /&/ The Haunted Clown Motel in Nevada

Beth and Bettina “visit” Nevada in this week’s episode… be prepared! Beth covers the mysterious premonition of death had by a young Kathy Hobbs. How did she know she was going to die? And, how horrible to have died, potentially, by the hands of a serial killer. Bettina (freaks Beth out) and shares the history, bizarrr-ity, and hauntings at the Clown Motel. I mean, I don’t know about you – but, hauntings from the cemetery right next door to the motel is more ideal than a clown standing over me while I sleep … what do you think?? Cheers!

“I don’t want to get any older” Kathy Hobbs told her mother, Vivian, when she was just a little girl. This was not a one time thing. Kathy didn’t want to get older because she was convinced she was going to die when she was 16 years old. Kathy was a very withdrawn child spending her time at home reading books. After her parent’s divorce Kathy and her younger sister moved to Los Vegas with their mother. There Kathy became a little more social until 4 months before April 20, 1987, her 16th birthday, . Was Kathy right? Did she die when she was 16? Listen as Beth takes us through this very odd case.

Tonopah is a small town in Nevada. Once a popular mining town now a town with a population of just under 2,500. One of the attractions in Tonopah is The Clown Motel, which sits right next to the Tonopah Cemetery. The cemetery is interesting in itself. The graves are lined with rocks and most of the headstone are made of wood. There have been many reports of apparitions seen coming up from their graves, disembodied voices and screams heard coming from the cemetery. The Clown Motel is also very haunted, and not only haunting with all the clown figurines, dolls and paintings staring at you, 2,000 to be exact! But many other things have been reported by the housekeepers and visitors to the motel. Listen as Bettina share some of the reports with you.

143. Death of Edna Suttles / Silver Swampy Buttons in South Carolina

South Carolina… here we come. Bettina covers the true crime this week, the abduction and murder of Edna Suttles. We hate stories like this… he snuffed the life out of someone with so much of it. Beth attempts to lighten things up with legends from the good state of South Carolina… beware of silver suited men, lizard men, and a Button Man? Cheers!

Bettina covers time line of a murder caught on separate surveillance cameras and pieced together by investigators looking into Edna Suttles, a reported missing person. Edna’s Cherokee Jeep was discovered on Sept 3, six days after she was reported missing, in the parking lot of the Best Western in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. Looking at surveillance footage from Aug 27th, investigators saw a man get out of the Cherokee, wipe down the inside as well as the outside of the car and walk in the direction of a nearby Food Lion grocery store. Neither the man or Edna had checked into the hotel. This footage launched the beginning of the solving of this sad case. Listen as Bettina takes you through the footage, the search and the eventual arrest of Daniel Printz, who is definitely not a “Prince of a man”.

Tunnels, swamps, and buttons, what do these three things have in common? Give us a listen as Beth fills us in on the tunnels running under the streets of Columbia, South Carolina and the strange creature that reportedly lives within the tunnels. She then takes us to Bishopville, S.C. where there have been many reports of….The Lizard Man in Scape Ore Swamp. To end her part of the episode, Beth tells us about Dalton Stevens, the Button King, making us add, yet another, place on our wish list of places to visit, The Button King Museum!

Cordelia Botkin / Legends of the Swamp….and Catman…Again

Good ol’ Delaware are you ready for a Killer Hangover? Beth covers the true crime this time! It’s been awhile, and she’s missed it! She chooses an oldie, but a goody to share this week… a true story of Death by Chocolate. It was the first murder by mail and much much more! Cordelia Botkin was something else!

Bettina shares the paranormal stories this time. Legends of Great Cypress Swamp and (with great excitement) the hauntings of CatMan in Long Cemetery! Sound familiar? Yes, Yes, Beth covered it before … but why not revisit Mr. CatMan?!

Cheers!!

It was the first time the U.S Postal service was used to commit murder, murder by chocolate. Beth takes us back to the years 1895 when 41 year old Cordelia Botkin met 32 year old John Dunning, a reporter for the Associated Press. It was love at first sight, even though both were married. Their affair lasted several years until John ended it and that’s when Cordelia showed her true colors. You know the saying, “Hell has no fury like a woman spurned”? Well that was Cordelia Botkin. Listen as Beth shares with us the true evil lying within this woman and the extreme measure she took to try to “get her man” back.

Three legends from the state of Delaware, two of which are a tie in to this week’s cocktail, Swamp Water. Bettina covers a Witch Tree, the Shelbyville Swamp Monster and a nonintentional revisit of CatMan. Something that all of these seem to have in common is the stalling of one’s car if visiting the area of these legends. Could it be a supernatural force stopping the cars from starting? Or, is it the hast of people in fear causing the cars to stall? You decide.

COCKTAIL: SWAMP WATER Recipe:

People described Cordelia as stocky, stout and frumpy, but that was not how Cordelia would describe herself. She found herself to be beautiful and very desirable to men. Photo source:

John Dunning, a reporter for the Associated Press, found himself madly in love with Cordelia. Photo source:

Cordelia was convicted of the murders of John’s wife, Mary Elizabeth Dunning and Mary Elizabeth’s sister, Ida Deane. The murder weapon, a box of arsenic laced chocolates. Cordelia was sentenced to life in prison. Photo source:

The Witch Tree was located within the Great Cypress Swamp near the southern Delaware border. Today all that remains of the old Chestnut Oak is a stump, but unusual lights and phenomena are still seen and happening in this area. Photo source:

The Shelbyville Swamp Monster was a 1960’s hoax carried out by two friends, but then what about the odd sights and sounds heard in the swamp before and after the hoax ended? Photo source:

CatMan Cemetery. Legend has it that if you knock three times on the crumbling brick wall in the back of the cemetery you may not only see the spirit of CatMan but the spirit will have tampered with your car so that it will not start as you try to flee the area. Photo source:

On the night of April 25, 1990 three men in a truck noticed groceries strewn on the side of the highway outside of Oklahoma City. When they got out to inspect the scene they found the body of a young, blond woman, barely alive. Police and an ambulance were called. The woman, who was identified as 20 year old Tonya Hughes, lived for only 5 days in the hospital, never regaining consciousness. Investigators believed that she had been killed on the side of the highway as a result of a hit and run, then to add to their investigation they discovered that the woman’s name was not Tonya Hughes, but Sharon Marshall, or was it Tonya Tadlock? As it turns out, it was not any of those, her name was Suzanne Marie Sevakis. And the man she was with, was that her husband or her father? Listen as Bettina tries her hardest to make sense of this very convoluted true crime that spanned decades.

The topic of the paranormal part of this episode also has a several names, Hornet Spook Light, Joplin Spook Light, Tri-State Spook Light, The Ozark Spook Light, just to name a few. Beth decided to just call it, The Spook Light. What are Spook Lights? Well, as Beth tells us, “they are lights that are spooky, and have an unknown entity to them.” There are many reports of these lights from different areas. The Spook Light the Beth covers is sighted on a 4 mile country road between Missouri and Oklahoma. Listen as Beth covers the history and sightings of these Spook Light and the strange ways they appear.
