More about the Episode

On September 29, 1982 in Arlington Heights – a suburb of Chicago, 27 year old Adam Janus woke up that morning with symptoms of a cold. On his way to pick up their kids from pre-school he stopped at a local drug store to get some cold medicine and Tylenol for his cold. The family had lunch then Adam took two Tylenol; within a few minutes Adam was on the floor, unresponsive. Two hours later he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Adam’s family gathered at the couple’s house in grief. Suffering from back pain, Stanley, Adam’s brother asked his wife to get some Tylenol. She gabbed two pills for Stanley and took two herself. within a few minutes of taking the medicine Theresa, Stanley’s wife, was convulsing and Stanley was unresponsive. Stanley Janus was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital and Theresa Janus died the following day. The Janus family was investigated and a medical professional, Nurse Jensen, was called in to help. It was she who determined that the Extra Strength Tylenol seemed to be the common denominator. The bottle of Tylenol was taken to be looked at more closely. Unfortunately there was another bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol that had to be looked at. There had been another mysterious death that morning in another suburb of Chicago. 12 year old Mary Kellerman had felt sick and had been given two Extra Strength Tylenol by her parents. She was pronounced dead shortly after taking the Tylenol.
Both Extra Strength Tylenol bottles were from a factory in PA. As the investigator poured out the pills from the bottles he noticed the smell of almonds……potassium cyanide. Testing on the pills determined that there were only 8 capsules per bottle that had been tampered with. Just one of those tampered capsules had enough cyanide to kill 1,000 people! That is why the victims had died in such a short time after taking the Tylenol. These four victims were not alone. Mary Reiner, 27, lived in yet another suburb of Chicago. She had just given birth and had been sent home from the hospital with some Extra Strength Tylenol. She too died shortly after taking the Tylenol. Mary McFarland, 31, complained of a headache at work and took two Extra Strength Tylenol from the bottle she had purchased the day before. She was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after taking the medicine. Paula Prince, a 35 year old flight attendant purchased a bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol after she landed at O’Hare. Her body was discovered on Oct 1 when police did a wellness check on her. Near her body was a newly opened bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol. All 7 victims had taken the Tylenol on September 29. The following morning the public was made aware of the Tylenol tampering and by that afternoon Extra Strength Tylenol from the PA lot was recalled. By October 4 there was a nation wide recall of all Tylenol, over 31 million bottles. Three more bottles were discovered containing tampered capsules in the recall. To this day it is unknown as to who tampered with the Tylenol or why. Three men were looked at, one of which was Ted Kaczynski the Unabomber, but no concrete evidence was found in the case of any of the three. If there is anything positive that came of this horrific event was that in 1983 Congress passed the Tylenol Bill, making it a federal offense to tamper with consumer products. And in 1989 manufacturers were given federal guidelines by the FDA to make all products tamper-proof.

The McPike Mansion, located in Alton, Il, is said to be very haunted. The mansion was built in 1869 for Henry McPike and his family who lived there until 1936. The house was then owned by several others until the 1950’s when it sat deserted for 40 years. During those 40 years the 16 room home, which has 11 marble fireplaces, intricate carved trim, and carved wooden banisters, was stripped clean by vandals, even the toilets were taken. Though abandoned, In June 1980 the McPike mansion was actually listed on the national register of Historic Places. In 1994 the McPike Mansion was actioned off to Sharyn and George Luedke, who still own the house. Year by year they have lovingly restored the dilapidated mansion and along the way have discovered that the McPike Mansion houses many spirits, 11 or more. Because of the abundant paranormal activity in the mansion a large number of paranormal investigators have visited the property as well as thousands of people from all over just interested in the McPike history. The mansion has been featured in the series, “Scariest Places on Earth”, “Fact or Faked: Paranormal files, and Ghost Adventures. Go visit the McPike Mansion, if you dare, we’d love to hear about your experience.
